The press sits atop an integrated two-drawer chest and retains its original maker's stamp for Johnston's, 290 Oxford Street, London. A remarkably clean, un-inked example, suggesting that this has been used as a linen-press rather than book press.
Designed for the grand country house household to press table linens and napkins, this piece combines historical utility with elegant proportions.
The top structure features a large, smoothly functioning central wooden screw mechanism surmounted by a beautifully turned acorn finial and double crossbar handle.
The press is mounted on a two-drawer base fitted with turned wooden knobs, supported by straight, square-tapered legs. Opening the interior drawer reveals the crisp original retailer/maker stamp: "FROM JOHNSTON'S 290 OXFORD ST LONDON".
Condition: Good original antique condition with age-related character, surface wear, and a well-matured patina. Structurally sound, stable, and fully functional.
