https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/foundersA late 17th century oak coffer, the solid thumb-moulded two-plank lid opening to an intact interior fitted with original lidded till box, set over a frieze inlaid with a contrasting parquetry chevron band of bog oak and holly, above three panels incised with geometric knotwork and lattice designs within channelled framing.
The pairing of a flush bog oak and holly chevron frieze with flat-incised geometric knotwork is a recognised hallmark of the West Yorkshire joined oak tradition. This distinctive decorative vocabulary reflects a high-status regional commission, of the type produced to furnish the substantial stone houses of prosperous West Riding yeoman clothiers during the late seventeenth century.
Retaining its period wrought-iron lock and lobed escutcheon, complete with a functioning period hand-forged iron key.
Very good antique condition, displaying a rich patina with honest surface wear consistent with age. The lid retains an early linen canvas reinforcement strip along the underside seam, with typical damp wear and traces of long-inactive historic worm to the rear feet. Structurally solid throughout, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1680.
