Item Details

A Georgian Thames Valley wheelback Windsor chair, the steam-bent ash hoop enclosing a hand-fretted wheelback splat and turned spindles, above out-swept crook arms flanking a deeply dished single-piece elm saddle seat, all raised on hand-turned ash legs united by a steam-bent crinoline stretcher.

The labour-intensive hand-worked construction exemplifies traditional turn-of-the-century Thames Valley craftsmanship, produced before more mechanised Victorian workshops. The generous arm spread and raked four-leg footprint offer grounded stability while the fully finished rear splat allows freestanding placement in a study or beside a hearth.

Very good antique condition, displaying a rich patina and minor surface wear consistent with genuine age. Structurally sound with tight original joinery, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1800.
