https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/foundersA fine George III Sheraton period mahogany cabinet bookcase of particularly compact form, the upper section featuring boxwood-strung Gothic astragal glazed doors opening to three shelves beneath a cornice with a chequered band and continuous elliptical frieze centered by an inlaid shell tablet, set on a cupboard base with twin doors displaying matching flame mahogany oval reserves within quarter-veneered fields and crossbanded margins, all raised on turned feet.
Perfectly scaled for a townhouse drawing room, study or formal dining room. The substantial shelved lower cupboard handles deep domestic storage, while the upper shelves offer excellent accommodation for a mix of literature and porcelain.
The bookcase section houses three shelves, comprising a central fixed shelf positioned between two adjustable shelves, with both sections accompanied by later keys operating the locks. The piece separates into two for transit, the upper bookcase securing to the base with two internal screws.
Very good antique condition, with an excellent, richly time-worn surface patination throughout, some minor historic veneer repairs and stable veneer contraction lines consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to place.
English, circa 1800.
