Item Details

A fine George III mahogany urn stand, the octagonal top with a shallow gallery enclosing radiating marquetry of rosewood, mahogany and satinwood, set over a frieze inlaid with neoclassical swags and housing a pull-out slide. The piece is raised on four square tapered legs inlaid with satinwood panels with cast brass collars, united by a lower cross-stretcher and raised on original brass ball feet.

Dating from the height of the late 18th-century English tea ritual, and reflecting the neoclassical elegance of the Sheraton period, its exceptionally slender proportions and remarkably compact footprint allow the piece to function seamlessly today as an elegant lamp, wine or display table within a formal drawing room or library.

The underside retains a W.F. Greenwood & Sons trade plaque from their prestigious York showrooms, dating to circa 1900.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound with a fully operational slide, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1780.
