Item Details

A late 19th century double-sided bamboo canterbury magazine stand by W. F. Needham, the divided upper rack capped with embossed brass rosette terminals and fitted with matching hand-painted lacquer panels, set over a lower large original lacquered undertier, all raised on out-swept legs terminating in brass foot caps stamped with the maker's mark.

Exemplifying the Anglo-Japanese taste of the late Victorian Aesthetic Movement, the design relies on strong geometric lines formed by the straight bamboo rails and internal divisions. The double-sided design allows the piece to sit freestanding between a pair of armchairs, offering dual-sided access while displaying finished lacquer work to both the front and rear of the room.

Very good antique condition, displaying minor surface wear consistent with age, with the original lacquered artwork exceptionally well preserved. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1890.
