Item Description
19th Century Shirvan Soumac Flatweave Carpet
3.03 x 2.36
Antique Soumac flatweaves from the Caucasus are exceptionally durable: stronger and longer lasting than a kilim rug. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols native to the region, and are highly sought after due to their expressive, playful character and use of natural dyed colours.
This stylish 19th Century example has a wonderful palette, with a muted salmon pink field, and denim blues and tan accents in the drawing, all in gracefully aged organic vegetable dyes. The design features three diamond patterns across the centre, framed by a creative, hooked border, woven in a deep chocolate brown colour.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with some minor age-related restoration finished to a high standard, this antique Caucasian Soumac is a timeless piece, with the versatility to compliment either a classic or contemporary interior.
We recommend using an underlay with this piece to keep it lying flat, which we would provide complimentary with the purchase.
