Antique Beshir Carpet, c. 1900

4.65 x 3.46 m

Beshir rugs are woven by the Beshir tribe of Turkmenistan in Central Asia. They are best known for their distinctive weaving style, in a region where most rugs produced by their neighbouring tribes can be recognised by their so-called ‘elephant foot’ pattern, and deep blues and reds.

This 19th-century example features a pomegranate blossom motif, inspired by earlier weavings of the 18th Century, symbolising prosperity, longevity and fertility, with a muted aubergine grey field and a variety of earthy, vegetable-dyed colours in its design. Its weaving has a precision and clarity uncommon in carpets of its type – truly a piece of one-of-a-kind craftsmanship and artistry.

This Beshir carpet is in very good condition for everyday use. It still retains its original dozen borders on all sides, together with its original fringes – a remarkable feature for a rug of this age.

An exquisite tribal piece with an understated feel in both colour and design, and in a rare large format, which would make a wonderful addition to a wide variety of settings.
