Item Description
An interesting Baktiar carpet c.1890 with an unusually bold, graphic drawing.
The subtle earthy colour field has a pleasant colour variation (abrash) that adds great depth and richness to the simple drawing, complimenting the variety of muted colour compositions. The main border is of great proportion and frames the central field nicely. The variety of colours are naturally-dyed and have aged gracefully.
Antique Baktiar carpets from west Persia have one of the most intriguing and distinct styles of any antique Persian rug and boast a fascinating historical heritage and character. They are one of the few types of Persian rugs to encompass both nomadic tribal and antique rug designs. They are notable for their high wool quality and rich colours.
This early Baktiar carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use. It has still retained its original short fringes and outer borders on all sides.
A lovely example of its type with a charming nativity that would add character in various settings.
