https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/gallery-yacouThe city of Khorassan, in Northeast Persia, is home to an ancient and prestigious tradition of weaving, stretching back as far as the Sassanid Period (241-651 A.D.) – its pieces are best known today for the diversity of their designs, the quality of their weaves, and their uniquely diverse colour palettes.
This striking 19th Century example features a grand-scale scrolling vine design witha great feeling of spontaneity, over a rare burgundy colour ground, well suited to this piece’s well-balanced, open composition. The artist has used a restrained, elegant palette, with tones of denim blue and light earthy ochre shades, and framed by a wide, highly decorative cornflower border – its fine weave lending a crisp clarity to the drawing. Early Khorassans of this type are rare to find in this large size - given its age, large format, unqiue and spontaneous design, and from the fact it bears the signature of a well-known masterweaver of its era, we believe it may have been a special commission for someone of title.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, though with some minor age related wear – its vergetable dyed colours have taken on a charming patina with age.
A sophisticated workshop weaving, with a great sense of space and lightness, and among the most interesting and attactive examples of its type we have had the pleasure of adding to our collection in some time.
Should this wonderful carpet be of interest, we would be more than happy to arrange to bring this to you to view in situ at your location, anywhere in the UK, or at our North London studio showroom, by appointment.
