Item Details

A superb Georgian sterling decanter and glass set, fully hallmarked for Joseph Angell I, London, 1827.

The firm of Joseph Angell & Son was formed around 1811 by Joseph Angell in Clerkenwell, London and went on to become one of the most important and largest silversmiths and jewellery makers in the mid 19th century.

This set comprises of two large handblown glass decanters with sterling silver screw-top rims and substantial silver lids/measures, together with a matching pair of stemmed glasses and working lock and key. Each decanter is numbered '1' and '2' with corresponding numbered silver caps and glass stoppers. Both decanters retain all original numbered elements. The fine stem glasses boast an identical 'bubble' design to the decanters and sit snuggly in their carrier. The glass carrier lifts to reveal a storage compartment beneath.

The glasses remain in an impeccable condition, free from any damage. The decanters show some light signs of wear; 'Decanter 1' has a small dink to the silver cap/measure and some discolouration to the glass near the base. 'Decanter 2' has some small nibbles around the 'bubble' design recess and a small chip to the underside (please see photographs). Both decanters' sterling silver screw top cap and rims remain crisp and thus function perfectly.

The case itself is a finely made and richly patinated mahogany with brass campaign handles, hinges, escutcheon and a vacant brass cartouche to the lid. Original green baize lining remains present to the base.

An exceptional and rare set.
