Item Details

An Oak bench, originating from a Lincolnshire court, dated to 1843.

L:183cm H:99cm D:37cm

Turned front tapering front legs, with a tall back, oak seat made from a single piece of Oak. Original worn finish retaining hand painted lettering to its back 'North Holland'.

Holland in Lincolnshire is from Old English hoiland, where the hoi is probably from a Brittonic-language term meaning "swamp".

Prior to about 1803, New Holland was essentially a minor creek within Barrow upon Humber parish.

A ferry service, initially a small operation, started around 1803, leading to the area becoming known as New Holland.
