A 19th century button-back armchair by Gregory & Co., London, dating to circa 1870.

A particularly low and well-proportioned example, with a deeply buttoned back, shaped upholstered arms and a deep traditionally sprung seat. The chair is raised on substantial ring-turned front legs made of oak with splayed rear legs, all legs retaining their brass castors stamped Cope Patent 'Strong'. Both of the rear legs are stamped GREGORY & CO.

Gregory & Co. were prominent London furniture makers and decorators, established in Regent Street by 1861 and known for producing good-quality furniture throughout the second half of the 19th century. The low proportions, substantial turned legs and quality of construction make this a particularly good example of their upholstered seating.

The frame is firm and sturdy, with no signs of old woodworm found. The traditionally sprung seat remains in good order and the existing fillings appear clean and serviceable. The chair is offered for upholstery, although the surviving upholstery beneath appears sufficiently sound that it is likely to only require a recover rather than rebuilding.
