A 19th Century sarcophagus-form storage ottoman, dating from around c.1860-1870.


The hinged rectangular lid is traditionally upholstered and appears to retain horsehair stuffing. It is finished with an intricate hand-worked floral beadwork top, arranged as individual panels with decorative borders.


The lid opens to reveal a useful storage compartment with its old interior lining still present. The box has a classic sarcophagus-form shape, with gently concave sides, moulded rails and small bun feet with castors below.


The ottoman is sturdy and firm, with no signs of old structural repairs and no woodworm found. No maker’s marks have been found. The hand-worked top shows age and wear, and the remaining exterior upholstery is worn, so the piece is offered with reupholstery in mind. Even so, the existing needlework top is a particularly attractive feature and may be worth retaining or incorporating into a future scheme.
