Item Details

An exceptionally rare hand-crafted wall light/sculpture, dating to the 1950’s, this stunning Spanish sculpture is modelled on the Visigoth Eagle, hand crafted in copper and semi-precious stones, the circular front copper plate covers the single E14 (small bayonet) lamp holder, which illuminates the stones from behind.

Height 75cm x Width 34.5cm x Depth 10cm

The Eagle represented the importance of the military in Visigoth culture.

The Visigoths (Visigothi, Wisigothi, Vesi, Visi, Wesi, Wisi) were a Germanic People united under the rule of a king and living within the Roman Empire during late antiquity. The Visigoths first appeared in the Balkans, as a Roman-allied barbarian military group united under the command of  Alaric I. Their exact origins are believed to have been diverse but they probably included many descendants of the Thervingi who had moved into the Roman Empire beginning in 376 and had played a major role in defeating the Romans at the Battle of Adrianople in 378

It is within what is now Spain and Portugal that the Visigoths created the Polity for which they are best remembered.

Although now virtually extinct as a society and culture, the Visigoth artistic influence is still highly visible across Europe to this day, with the gothic Eagle being the most important and significant of their symbols.

The copper is bright with small areas of Verdigris patina. Light fixture has been fully rewired and PAT tested.

Lamp holder takes a single small bayonet bulb.
