Item Details

An exceptional and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century French Crapaud (Toad) chair, masterfully marrying classical European opulence with a contemporary, curated aesthetic. These low-slung boudoir chairs feature a beautifully contoured, enveloping backrest and a generously proportioned, deep-seated circular cushion, epitomizing the luxurious comfort championed during the Napoleon III era.

The chairs have been beautifully transformed via an intentional, beautiful "deconstructed" upholstery technique. The outer perimeter and arched cresting are meticulously dressed in diamond-tufted white fabric with deep buttoning, providing a plush, sculptural frame. In striking contrast, the central backrest and main seat are upholstered in a raw, textural oatmeal-toned line, complete with an exposed, hand-stitched central spine.

The chairs are grounded by the original, finely carved circular water gilded base. Each is raised on four short, robust cabriole legs featuring elegant scroll details, boasting a wonderfully aged, authentic distressed patina that catches the light beautifully.
