Item Details

An exceptionally fine and rare mid-century life-size Italian terracotta sculpture of a seated greyhound, showcasing the height of post-war Italian ceramic mastery. Rendered in a striking, hyper-realistic architectural scale standing at an impressive 86 cm tall.

The sculpture is a brilliant testament to the renowned anatomical craftsmanship of mid-century Italian studios, heavily associated with master workshops such as Favaro Cecchetto and the prestigious ateliers of the Bassano region. Unlike more stylized or static animal models of the era, this specific mold captures the arresting, sinuous drama of the sighthound. It features a beautifully pronounced and finely detailed rib cage, an ultra-sleek tucked abdomen, prominent spinal vertebrae, and highly expressive, taut muscular definition throughout the hindquarters.

The dog is poised in a highly alert, aristocratic posture with its head elegantly tilted upward and turned slightly to the side. The glaze execution is superb, a glossy, lustrous off-white tin glaze showing marvelous depth, and accentuate the contours of the muscles. The muzzle, expressive eyes, and nails are meticulously hand-detailed. The underside of the base bears the authentic, incised "Made in Italy" heritage mark.

Presented in absolutely superb condition. Given the notorious fragility of large-scale mid-century Italian earthenware, surviving examples almost universally suffer from chipped ears, broken tails, or crude structural repairs to the paws. This piece is remarkably free from any chips, cracks, structural hairlines, a wonderful example of classic Hollywood Regency and mid-century Italian decorative art.
