An extraordinarily rare and highly theatrical late 19th-century French artist’s studio or salon display easel in the distinguished Style Troubadour (French Gothic Revival). Designed to showcase masterwork paintings while standing as a sculptural tour de force in its own right, this magnificent A-frame easel is entirely enveloped in its original, sumptuous crimson-red velvet fabric.


 


​Historically favored by elite Parisian portrait studios and high-society galleries of the Belle Époque, fabric-wrapped easels provided a soft, non-abrasive surface to protect precious, heavy giltwood frames from scratching, while simultaneously adding dramatic, jewel-toned depth to the presentation of fine art.


 


​The silhouette boasts exceptional architectural presence, drawing heavily from historic French design codes. The commanding crest is crowned by a prominent, carved fleur-de-lis finial, the definitive emblem of French heritage and is flanked by twin outward-sweeping crocket scrolls. This elegant geometry is masterfully mirrored below, where the lower stretcher features an integrated trefoil motif, and the structural legs flare out dramatically into beautifully proportioned scroll feet.
