Item Description

An exceptional set of 3 hand crafted Abyssinian Processional Crosses, dating to the late 19th/early 20th century, heavy pieces, finished in silver plate.

Three types of crosses were made in Ethiopia: those worn around the neck, those intended to be held, and these processional crosses, which had wooden staffs socketed into them. Of the three, processional crosses are by far the largest and tend to be reserved for various religious festivals such as Enkutatash (New Year). They are used exclusively by priests to bless individuals, to mark the rhythms of religious songs, for support during services that last upward of eight consecutive hours, and in other assorted ecclesiastical functions.

Largest Cross Height 48cm x Width 34cm x Depth of Base 6.5cm

Medium Cross Height 46.5cm x Width 29.5cm x Depth of Base 6cm

Small Cross Height 17cm x Width 9.5cm x Depth of Base 2.5cm
