Item Description
This beautiful Sacred Heart Sculpture dates to around 1790 and would originally have hung in a German or Austrian Church. The heart is crafted from wood with a gesso covering and hand painted, with a carved torchiere and cross to the top it is surrounded by gilt rays, it shows the piercing to heart where Jesus was struck with a spear on the cross, a truly historic and decorative religious objet d'art.
Areas of loss to the gesso, as to be expected on an item with this age and history, also small signs of ancient historic worm, again long gone.
'The Sacred Heart is often depicted in Christian art as a flaming heart shining with divine light, pierced by the lance-wound, encircled by the crown of thorns, surmounted by a cross, and bleeding. Sometimes, the image is shown shining within the bosom of Christ with his wounded hands pointing at the heart. The wounds and crown of thorns allude to the manner of Christ's Passion, while the flames represent a furnace of ardent love'
