Item Details

A stunning 18th Century French guaiac wood and walnut commode with shaped, marble top. Having a very nice shaped front and moulded panel sides, with excellent use of solid guaiac wood. Having moulded, canted corner panels to the front, with three deep drawers, ornate drop bar handles and escutcheons. Standing on short, scrolled cabriole legs.

This wonderful quality commode has a nice colour and lovely wax finish. Guaiac wood comes from a small tree - Palo Santo, one of the hardest and most resilient woods in the world. Its heartwood is brown, black or green, with elegant streaks. Guaiac is sometimes called the 'wood of life' or 'holy wood'. It is a tree growing in the tropical zones of South America, mainly in the West Indies.

It is difficult to find furniture made from this wood, therefore making this a rare commode.
