Item Description
An excellent George III Mahogany Side/Pier Table in the Manner of Thomas Chippendale or Mayhew and Ince, having a finely figured mahogany top of excellent colour, cross banded in satinwood, above a fluted frieze with five finely carved paterae, one in the centre of the frieze and another capping each of the four legs. The legs also fluted and collared, tapering gracefully and terminating in toupie feet in the French manner.
This table is typical of the graceful pieces designed in the neoclassical taste by Robert Adam, James Wyatt and the other premiere architects at the end of the 18th century and made by such firms as Mayhew and Ince, John Linnell and Thomas Chippendale and dates to c.1770-80. The carved paterae on this piece are often seen on pieces by Mayhew and Ince with Chippendale and Linnell's neoclassical period work more often relying on inlay rather than carving.
