Item Details

A vibrant mid-20th Century French oil on canvas depicting a sunlit Mediterranean village, believed to be near Perpignan in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

Painted in a bold Expressionist manner, the composition captures a cluster of terracotta-roofed houses nestled amongst trees, with rolling hills beneath an expansive cobalt blue sky.

Executed with confident, heavily textured impasto brushwork, the painting is rich in movement and colour, employing a vivid palette of ochres, vermilions, greens and deep blues. The energetic application of paint and simplified forms reflect the enduring influence of the Fauvist and Post-Impressionist traditions associated with southern France.

Signed lower right (indistinct, possibly Marliave) and presented in a carved and painted wooden frame.
