Depicting the basilica in ruins after the fire of 1823 the fire started when repairing the roof. The name 'outside the walls' refers to the location of the basilica being outside ancient Rome's city walls. Etching. A well struck etching in very clean condition, mounted framed and glazed.

Luigi Rossini (1790-1857, Italian) followed Piranesi's lead and produced a hundreds of engravings reporting the latest archeological excavations and architectural wonders to an avidly interested European audience.
