This is an antique Mr. Punch doorstop. An English, cast iron figurative door keeper, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1880.

Originating in the commedia dell'arte of 16th century Italy, Punchinello came to be known as Mr. Punch, his first recorded appearance occurring in May 1662.

Strikingly cast, with a wonderful character and endearing detail
Displays a desirable aged patina, a minor loss to lower edge under inspection
Quality cast iron replete with fine form, and presenting a consistent graphite finish
Pleasingly robust and substantial with a weight of 3.35kg (7.36 lb)

Mr. Punch sits atop a pile of books, a faithful dog by his side
Slyly, the figure is shown 'cocking a snook' with his left hand against his nose
Dressed in fine robes, his right hand holding a feathered quill and piece of paper
Late Victorian 'diamond' registered design mark imprint visible to paper
