This is an antique portrait. An English, framed ceramic painting, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1890 and later.
Deputy Surgeon General John Robert Theobalds (dates unknown - granted retirement by Queen Victoria in April 1880) was stationed in Madras, as part of Her Majesty's Indian Military Forces. Villier's & Quicks photographic services of Bristol held their premises at 42 Park Street at the end of the 1880s. Their speciality was recreating photographs in oil or watercolour.
