This is a large vintage alarm gong. An Oriental, carved hardwood stand with German brass gong, dating to the Art Deco period, circa 1930.

Fascinating dragon carved frame with earlier ordnance gong
Profuse relief carving accentuates the stout hardwood with deep caramel hues
Presents a pair of highly detailed dragons, united with a human mask to the centre
The dragon body skilfully forms the upright supports with great effect

Gong suspended beneath the frame upon a short brass chain
Replete with a cork striker, set upon a turned handle
Gong formed from a late 19th century German shell casing

Engraved with the maker's mark of Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe
Crowned M Mark reveal its original use with the Imperial Navy
Roman numeral identifies the month of manufacture as November 1899, batch 13
The whole stands upon a wide base, with superb dragon relief detail and Oriental motif
