Believed to be Philippe of Lorraine (1643 – 8 December 1702), known as the Chevalier de Lorraine, who was a French nobleman, descendant of the Dukes of Elbeuf, member of the House of Guise, cadet branch of the House of Lorraine. He was the renowned lover of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, brother of Louis XIV.
The painting has been restored and relined at some point in its history, the age of the canvas lining would indicate late 19th or early 20th Century. The painting is framed with a simple mahogany baton frame. Circa 1665-70.
