Item Details

A compelling late 17th Century Genoese fresco fragment attributed to Domenico Piola (1627–1703) or his workshop.
Depicting a prophet accompanied by an Amorino. Piola was the leading figure of the Genoese Baroque, heading the prolific Casa Piola, whose fresco cycles decorated the grand palazzi and churches of Liguria. Works attributable to the master or his circle remain highly sought after for their rich colour, expressive modelling, and connection to Genoa’s most important artistic dynasty. This fragment retains the hallmarks of Piola’s style: warm terracotta and honeyed tones, supple drapery, sensitively rendered flesh, and the gentle theatricality typical of Genoese Baroque frescoes. The subject — a contemplative prophetic figure led or enlightened by a winged Amorino — suggests its original placement within an allegorical or devotional cycle, likely part of a vaulted ceiling or overdoor ensemble. Fresco fragments of this size and quality occupy a strong niche within the market for Italian Baroque decoration.
Their scale and sculptural presence give them excellent decorative appeal for contemporary interiors, while the Piola attribution adds scholarly and collector interest.
