Item Details

This is a large, handcrafted model of a traditional dhow boat, meticulously constructed primarily from teak wood. The dhow, a traditional sailing vessel historically used in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea, is faithfully reproduced in this scale model, capturing the maritime heritage of Middle Eastern and East African cultures.

The model is predominantly made from teak, a durable and richly grained hardwood prized for its resistance to water and decay.
The hull features a beautiful two-tone finish, with the upper part in dark teak and the lower section painted in a lighter tone, likely simulating the lime-washed or tarred hulls of historic dhows.

Nails and fastenings are visibly used in the hull construction.

The model showcases the classic slender, curved prow of a dhow, rising gracefully and culminating in a decorative scroll-like flourish.
A similar aesthetic treatment is applied to the stern, which is squared off and equipped with rudder supports and a vertical steering oar—reminiscent of the large tillers used on ocean-going dhows.

The deck holds a series of small rowing oars and the vessel is rigged with two main masts, outfitted with spars and a complex system of lines and pulleys that reflect traditional lateen sail rigging.

The model is mounted on a pair of wooden cradles that elevate it slightly above the surface for display.
