Mid-Century Ercol Studio Couch / Day Bed in Beech and Elm, Circa 1960s


A true icon of British mid-century design, this Ercol Studio Couch—also known as the day bed—is a timeless piece that embodies both style and versatility. Designed by Lucian Ercolani for Ercol in the 1950s and 60s, the studio couch was intended to function as a comfortable sofa by day and a practical bed by night, making it a staple of the modernist home.


This particular example boasts a beautifully sculpted beech frame with elegant, outward-sweeping arms and spindled backrests, which curve gently to cradle the upholstered cushions. The elm seat and armrests showcase Ercol's trademark craftsmanship, with warm tones and grain patterns that add visual richness and warmth to the minimalist form.


The three back cushions and single full-length base cushion are upholstered in a charming vintage tapestry-style fabric with a soft floral motif. The upholstery is in excellent condition, and the frame retains a lovely honeyed patina, showing only minor, age-appropriate wear.


An authentic piece of British design heritage that remains as functional and stylish today as it was over half a century ago.
