Item Description
A stunning ceramic bottle vase by Derek Clarkson (1928–2013). The 'bottle' form is synonomous with Clarkson, along with the satin matt glaze and the cobalt/iron calligraphic brush decoration. The Japanese-inspired look to his pieces was shared by the 'father of British studio pottery' Bernard Leach in his St Ives workshop, and may have had some influence on Clarkson as a young student. This piece has his signature stamp 'DC' to the base.
Derek Clarkson trained at the Manchester College of Art, later to become Senior Lecturer in Ceramics at the Manchester School of Art. In 1965 his work was included in the Design Council's Craft Index. The V&A have pieces of his pottery in their collection.
