A striking watercolour of a cat arching its back amongst tree foliage by Elsie Mabel Whitford (1897–1994). The painting has a wonderful composition and displays a great sense of design.



Elsie Whitford was born and brought up in Birmingham, and entered the Birmingham School of Art in 1915 where she studied book illustration. It was here that she was to meet her long time collaborator Nora Yoxall (1892–1998), with whom she formed a working partnership specialising in stained glass projects. An example of their stained glass work can be found in Muswell Hill Methodist Church - the work was executed by them in 1937.
