https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/marc-kitchen-smithA delightfully naive oil painting of a ship moored in a harbour. Sourced from a house near Fowey, its simplicity is reminiscent of the work of Cornish artists Alfred Wallis and Bryan Pearce. There is however something, we think, extra special about this piece - its honesty. The overall composition is very stylised, so it is the details that create the life and charm of this picture. On the left hand side a fisherwoman stands waiting on the quayside outside a row of cottages, arms akimbo. In the right hand corner a fisherman is loading, or unloading, lobster pots into his row boat. What looks like a lighthouse has been painted on the promontory of the harbour wall. A little moored lugger with red sails carries the initials 'P. D.' - possibly the initials of the artist?
The reverse of the wood panel it is painted on has old distemper paint on it, suggesting it was painted on a fragment of found timber. Truly a very unique piece of art, and definitely one of our favourite recent finds. We have had it framed so that it is ready to hang.
