Item Details

A beautiful 19th century burr walnut 'Bonheur Du Jour'. Circa 1860.

This is an English piece designed in the French manner. Retaining its original locks, each stamped VR with coronet and a London maker C & T.

Desk of this style were named ‘Bonheur du Jour’ meaning 'happiness of the day' in French.

Veneered in burr walnut, with tulipwood crossbanding and finely inlaid boxwood marquetry, showing sinuous floral design and urns. The whole with gilt metal mounts. The interior is veneered in rosewood with kingwood banding between the three drawers. The original leather and gilt tooled inset is present. There is a secret compartment slide which reveals a velvet interior.

The drop front operates smoothly on heavy brass hinges, with no squeaks or movement in use, and is sturdy enough to accommodate a laptop. The original key is present. The lock is damaged, but the key remains useful for opening the lid.

The cupboard doors with hand blown glass and velvet lined interior retain their original gilt metal working key, operating correctly. These have gilt brass galleries and are flanked by a small central drawer with a shaped mirror above. The piece stands on elegant cabriole legs.

There is a slight shrinkage opening to the left hand side near the back, and to the front frieze on the right, a common occurrence with this construction. The piece is stable and sturdy. Please refer to the photographs.

Overall in very good clean condition, with a wonderful colour, it has been cleaned and given a light polish. The velvet interiors showing age related wear.
