Item Details

A fine Art Deco figured walnut demi lune cabinet with ebonised scalloped columns and silver plated handles. Finished with silvered floral carved detail. English. Circa late 1920s.

Of exceptional quality, the cabinet has four graduated drawers to the centre, flanked by two curved cupboards, having choice figured rich walnut book match veneers over solid mahogany on most parts. Note the underside with traditional through‑tenon construction. Panelled mahogany back.

The design is British, this is noted by the construction, although very much in the early French Art Deco period. The silver plated handles indicate a maker of considerable standing. They are beautifully made, well cast and plated, and of unmistakably fine quality. The visible parts of the hinges, also silver plated, reinforce the level of craftsmanship throughout.

Retaining the original polished patina, which shows a wonderful colour and a mellow shine. You should be able to see this in some of the photographs. There are a few light marks expected with age, some light scratch marks in places, mainly to the top.

The drawer interiors are made of solid mahogany, with dovetail construction. All are lined with baize. The top and bottom drawers have cutlery dividers. These, as shown in the photographs, can be removed if needed to enable drawer space. The two middle drawers have been re lined with baize at some time in the past. The top shelves on either side have been replaced at some point in the past. Although in laminated ply, they have been well made and fitted.

All drawers work very smoothly. The cabinet retains the original key, which works all drawer locks. The doors open and close very well on ball catches. There are no keys for the doors.

A striking Art Deco piece that sits well in a wide range of room settings.
