Item Details

Rare sterling silver miniature wall plaque depicting St Michael. Hallmarked for Dunstan Pruden (1907-1974). London 1972.

In very good original condition, with light rubbing and untouched patina.

Dunstan Pruden was one of the leading British ecclesiastical silversmiths of the 20th century, celebrated for his refined craftsmanship and his rare ability to model figurative forms directly in silver. Trained at the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London, he later joined the Catholic craft community at Ditchling, where his work aligned with the Arts & Crafts ideal of honest, devotional making.

Pruden produced chalices, crucifixes, jewellery, and liturgical metalwork distinguished by clarity of line, expressive modelling, and meticulous hand‑work. His commissions include major pieces for churches and cathedrals across Britain, most famously the chalice for Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral made from donated wedding rings. As head of silversmithing at Brighton School of Art for over three decades, he influenced a generation of post‑war British makers.

Examples of Pruden's work are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum and significant private collections.
