Description
This richly textured oil painting presents an expansive landscape dominated by a solitary poplar tree and rocky foreground, opening onto rolling hills beneath a luminous, softly coloured sky. Vigorous impasto and energetic brushwork build the terrain through overlapping passages of turquoise, blue, mauve, ochre, green and rose, giving the surface an almost sculptural quality. Rather than describing the landscape naturalistically, the artist uses heightened colour and rhythmic strokes to convey atmosphere and movement. The slender vertical tree provides a strong counterpoint to the sweeping horizontal landscape, creating a particularly balanced composition. Signed lower left, the work reflects the expressive approach to colour and landscape associated with early twentieth-century European Post-Impressionist painting.
