Item Details

Description
An abstract mixed-media composition incorporating torn French and Spanish newspaper fragments, bold black gestures and textured ochre and gold-coloured passages. Sweeping marks, splashes and descending drips contrast with exposed paper and printed headlines, creating a layered surface.

The work has stylistic affinities with post-war European Art Informel, combining expressive paint handling with everyday printed materials.

Artist Details
The artist remains unidentified. The French and Spanish printed fragments provide research clues but do not establish the artist’s nationality or where the work was made.

References to Kennedy and Khrushchev suggest early-1960s newspaper material. They do not confirm the artwork’s date, since older cuttings could have been used later.

Style
Gestural abstraction with an emphasis on texture, torn edges and contrasting materials. The restricted black and ochre palette and exposed newspaper have affinities with post-war European experimental painting.

Subject
An abstract arrangement of painted forms and fragmented newspaper text. Visible French phrases include Les larmes de sang (“tears of blood”) and cauchemar (“nightmare”). Their presence may contribute meaning, but the artist’s intended subject is unknown.

Condition
The photographs show discolouration, creasing, tears and edge wear, together with tape and adhesive remnants on the reverse. Some torn edges are intentional elements of the collage. The stability of the raised paint and adhered paper cannot be determined from photographs. Please see photographs.
