This captivating drawing allows us the privilege of seeing the artistic process at work. In this unique composition, a series of animals are shown trailing behind one another, each one in a slightly reduced stage of sketching, yet all magnificent in distinct ways. This finely executed pastoral drawing, attributed to Thomas Sidney Cooper or a close follower, captures a tranquil procession of cattle and sheep approaching water. Rendered in graphite and wash, it displays the assured technique and compositional harmony typical of Cooper’s school. Each animal advances in varying degrees of finish—from soft preliminary outlines to fully realized forms—revealing the artist’s disciplined observational method.
