These plaster casts of statues from Antiquity were sold by museums to stately homes during 19th Century and the time of the "Grand Tour" - the original of this statue of Diana is in Le Louvre in Paris.
Widely believed to represent the Goddess Artemis and traditionally attributed to the sculptor Praxiteles. The sculpture on which the present lot is modelled was discovered in 1792 by Gavin Hamilton on the property of the Prince Borghese at Gabii and immediately became part of the Borghese collection. It is now housed in the Louvre.
This example still has it's original socle & plinth.
