Item Details

Tall, narrow, 19th century French mirror with gilt reeded frame, circa 1850. Where the mirror has been cleaned for more than 150 years, the gilding has thinned along the raised bands of the frame, revealing the burnished, dark, terracotta bole beneath but leaving the original gilding in the recessed bands of the frame giving an attractive mix of light and dark. The original glass has a little, attractive "frost flower" age towards the base but still gives an excellent reflection. This mirror would have been part of the wooden panelling in a reception room of an important French house but will now make a very useful full-length mirror.
