Item Description
French Napoleon III period (1852-70) gilt overmantel mirror with re-entrant upper corners and curved top. The frame is decorated down the centre with overlapping leaves, berries and crossed ribbons, bordered with alternating beads and lozenges along the outside edge and ribbon twists along the sight edge. The mirror has an extravagantly decorative cartouche with bay leaves, crossed torch and quiver of arrows, two birds set within a circlet of flowers and leaves and floral swags over the glass. A little palm tree sits on each top corner, mid-way down each side of the frame is a crested shield containing intertwined letters R and C and curling acanthus leaves decorate each lower corner. The bevelled glass is in very good condition with just a hint of age, giving a clear reflection. The pair of birds and initials suggest that this mirror was a wedding gift and it is in excellent, original condition throughout.
