Item Details

Very large antique French giltwood margin mirror, circa 1840. The outer frame has a burnished gilt finish with little diagonal leaves placed at intervals. The inner frame is decorated with little, angled, ovals alternating with a bead, changing direction mid-way along each frame section and forming a little heart. A border of glass runs along the central mirror plate and this has small, scallop cut edges along three sides. This mirror has a wonderful, giltwood, decorative crest of scrolling acanthus leaves and each corner between the inner and outer frames has a similar decoration as well as a small Venetian glass leaf joining the narrow, inner, glass frame sections. The central glass is bevelled, mercury glass and has just a hint of age but gives an excellent reflection. This is a magnificent and very special mirror.
