Very large, antique, pale gilt French mirror, circa 1890, with an elegant, serpentine top adorned with a delicate, curling, pierced, acanthus leaf cartouche. The narrow, watergilt, layered frame is a mixture of burnished and matt gold, decorated with more acanthus leaves at each corner and mid-way down each long side and the gold leaf continues around the outer sides of the frame. Where this mirror has been dusted for more than 100 years, the gilding has thinned a little revealing the pale terracotta and cream gesso layers beneath. The original glass has a wide bevel and is in excellent condition, giving a very good reflection. This lovely mirror has a classic French look without being too decorative and would add space and light to any large room.
