The Younger range was rationalised with new models like this one in 1968. Prior to this date John J Herbert designed all their pieces, but he was then joined by A.R.Pledge for the newly introduced Sequence Range. This model is the largest of the 4 dining tables in this range. It comfortably seats 8, but with it’s leaves in place it was sold as a 10 seater table. The leaves store underneath in the pull out extensions. There is room in the design for larger leaves or further leaves, so it could in theory be made even larger. Extends to just under 8ft which is 244cms. Each leaf is 33.5cms.
Our 1968 catalogue has a pencilled in price for this table of £56. At this date the G Plan catalogue also has a teak dining table which extends to 8ft, but only cost £38 10shillings , so the Younger table is nearly 50% more. A Younger were a premium maker so this price difference is hardly surprising. At the same date a Younger sideboard was £70 10 shillings, whilst the equivalent G Plan one was £53 10 shillings, which only about a third more. The Younger table is much more stylish and 5 cms wider.
Condition
Fully stripped, cleaned and oiled . It was rather faded and some light marks when we bought it, but it’s now looking great again with no obvious marks or scratches. As with all vintage pieces you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
Notes
176cms x 94.5cms unextended, each leaf adds 34.5cms taking it to 245cms. Height 73.5cms
The legs are fixed so as long as your doorways are at least 74cms wide it will fit in on it’s side. If a few cms narrower and you have plenty of space behind the door you can often get it in by getting 2 legs round then swivel to get the top and other legs round !
