Archie Shine Hamilton sideboard designed by Robert Heritage

When this lovely design was first launched in Newcastle in 1957 it was the first long low British sideboard to come on the market and was considered to be ground-breaking . Designed by Robert Heritage who was probably the most influential British furniture designers of the time and made by the then small maker Archie Shine whose business was soon to grow because of the success of this model . It was made in various woods with this combination of mahogany and rosewood being we think by far the nicest . Archie Shine furniture was aimed at wealthy middle class customers , which was why it’s longer and deeper than models made by most British makers . It was expensive at the time and Archie Shine was known in the furniture for using some of the choicest veneers . He was a trained cabinet maker himself and had very high standards so only employed the best properly trained craftsmen to produce his furniture .

Lesley Jackson in her excellent book Modern British Furniture , Design since 1945 , says ” It was heralded as an example of quintessentially British design , countering prevailing Scandinavian trends . It caused a big stir in the industry and proved lastingly influential , winning a Design of the Year award in 1958 . The main talking point was its considerable length . it was considerably longer than other sideboards “. And she also says ” By making the cabinet lower than normal , it reduced the impression of bulk and created a large usable surface . With its sleek form and restrained aesthetic , it had an unmistakeable modern appearance , while retaining something of 18th century elegance without in any way looking backwards ” . That’s still true today nearly 70 years after it was first shown .

Not a cheap piece to buy , but made with wood finishes by craftsmen that today would be really difficult to match today without spending 4 or 5 times the price , so we think it offers great value .
