Archie Shine teak Hamilton console table by Robert Heritage

This is the rarer 2 drawer console/writing table . The 3 drawer version was usually sold as a dressing table with a mirror , but also came as a console table without the mirror . The Hamilton range was made using various veneers such as laurel , rosewood and here in teak . Archie Shine was known in the trade for sourcing the best veneers with really good figuring . His pieces are rarely labelled as they were retailed by high end shops like Heals of London and their provincial counterparts who all wanted to sell unbranded pieces or use their own labels .

Archie Shine was a relatively small maker and his pieces were expensive when new . Console tables were a luxury extra at the time so were never sold in large numbers and only a few makers produced them , so they rarely turn up for sale .

Archie Shine was a talented cabinet maker who started his own business in the early 1950’s making standard Queen Anne style furniture , but he soon saw that there was going to be a market for high end modern pieces . Robert Heritage was already established as one of the top British furniture designers of the time and he started designing for Shine in 1956 , coming up with the revolutionary Hamilton sideboard in 1957 . Other pieces were added to the range with bedroom furniture following soon . Robert Heritage was an amazingly prolific designer who produced designs for a number of manufacturers , as well as being an influential professor at the RCA . He worked with Archie Shine from 1956 until Mr Shine retired in the mid 1970’s .
