Early 60’s Greaves & Thomas newly upholstered sofa bed
With a lovely sculptural afrormosia frame this is is one of the lesser seen sofabeds/put-u-ups from Greaves & Thomas. They specialised in good quality contemporary sofa beds as well as sofas, chairs and also various dining and occasional furniture in the 1960’s before being taken over by Schreiber in 1968. They had a really talented designer in Walter Cornell who worked for them and then Schreiber until he retired in the mid 1970’s. Walter was particularly adept at designing stylish upholstery that would fit into both modern and more traditional interiors.
The quality of Greaves & Thomas 1960’s upholstery as well as a couple of others is that such pieces are still being used some 60 years after it was first made . It may look expensive but to get this quality today would cost far more and woods like afrormosia are no longer available and are much nicer than todays plantation grown woods.
Mostly designed to be used as a sofa but easily turned into a bed for occasional use by visitors, so ideal for smaller houses and apartments.
The wood frame has been cleaned and oiled. Our in-house upholsterer has upholstered it to current UK Fire Regulations for domestic use. The top cover is a natural wool and flax woven fabric by Camira in a soft light blue woven with lighter highlights, quite neutral and works well with the wood.

Newly upholstered and the wood frame cleaned and oiled and looking great. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely .
