Fyne Ladye afrormosia shallow desk by Richard Hornby

We’ve only had this model twice before and it rarely appears on the market. Fyne Ladye pieces are often described as Heals as they sold a lot of their furniture in the early 1960’s and it’s sometimes found with their label. Like other quality British makers they rarely labelled their pieces as high end retailers didn’t like selling branded furniture. They also made a shorter version with only a drawer to one side.

It’s in afromosia which is a dark teak that was used by a few top quality British makers in the early 1960’s. The more golden orange teak was virtually only used for cabinet making as a veneer but afromosia could only be used as a solid wood or very thick veneers so soon became too expensive.

It started life as a dressing table but we find that mostly people are looking to buy pieces like this for use as a shallow desk and this one arrived without any mirror. Richard Hornby designed a very successful range of dining furniture in around 1961 followed by a modular bedroom series the following year and this is one from that range.

All Fyne Ladye furniture is beautifully made with nice simple detailing. This one has lovely internal fittings to some of the drawers which would be ideal for holding pens and various stationary.

We bought as part of a collection of matching pieces from the same range. They’re all the same height and nearly the same depth and they look good singly or in groups. At time of listing we also had a tall narrow chest from the same range.

Width 160cms, height 71.5cms, depth 50.5cms. The kneehole is wider than most at 73cms, and is 61cms in height giving plenty of legroom.
